Judge Sater’s excellent mediation skills have earned him an exceptionally high settlement rate since he retired in 1996. His fine tuned mediation and negotiation techniques have helped him settled a full range of cases involving complex, multiparty cases, probate, insurance coverage, environmental matters, all areas of employment, business (including fraud) and partnerships. He also has expertise in personal injury cases, product liability, real estate, construction, property damage and medical and legal malpractice. On the bench, Judge Sater handled a full range of tort and contract litigation.

Judge Sater is recognized as an excellent "settlement judge" with a unique ability to wade through extraneous "fluff" and deal directly with the issues, using his highly developed "people skills" and thorough knowledge of the law.

  • Judge Sater was appointed to the Sonoma County Superior Court in November 1976. During his 21 years on the bench, he presided over hundreds of civil and criminal trials, Judge Sater served in all special capacities including Presiding Judge and Law and Motion. While handling the Court’s Domestic OSC calendar, Judge Sater introduced a mandatory "meet and confer" program in his court with particular emphasis on mediation and negotiation. He has heard hundreds of settlement conferences in a program to reduce the Court’s civil backlog.

  • Prior to his judicial career, he spent several years practicing in Sonoma County as a sole practitioner with a general litigation practice.
