JUDGE RONALD GREENBERG (Ret.)

ADR EXPERIENCE & SPECIALTIES

During his 24 years as a judge, retiring from the Alameda County Superior Court in 2000, Judge Greenberg worked tirelessly in all areas of the law. During those years on the bench, he realized that the adversarial system placed serious limitations on the settlement process. He soon gained a reputation as a settlement specialist, successfully resolving hundreds of cases involving employment, landlord/tenant, construction, legal and medical malpractice, personal injury, real estate, business, contracts, labor, etc. Judge Greenberg has skillfully handled numerous multi-party cases. In addition to mediation, Judge Greenberg has maintained a very active arbitration practice. During the past few years, he has worked on scores of medical malpractice, employment, and labor arbitrations

Judge Greenberg provides a unique service by merging his judicial authority with his skills as a highly trained mediator. With more than 300 hours of mediation training including intensive courses taught by Stanford and Harvard faculty, Judge Greenberg has developed listening and other skills that help him understand the many facets of every dispute. He assists attorneys and clients expand their options, helping them craft more creative solutions that address their particular conflict. Aware of the imbalance of power in relationships, Judge Greenberg treats participants evenhandedly, creating a peaceful mediation environment, guided by an even judicial temperament.

ON THE BENCH

Judge Greenberg served as Chief Administrative Law Judge of the State Agricultural Labor Relations Board from 1976-1982, at which time he was appointed Municipal Court Judge in the Berkeley-Albany Judicial District. He succeeded to the Alameda County Superior Court in 1998.

LAW PRACTICE

Judge Greenberg served as an appellate litigator for the national Labor Relations Board, arguing cases in the Federal Courts of Appeal including the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 9th Circuits. He then became a Deputy Public Defender in Contra Costa County.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

  • Washburn School of Law - Conducted workshops instructing law students and faculty in Mediation and mediation practices.
  • Judicial Educator Cambodia - Co-produced written materials and taught a ten-day training program for 60 of Cambodia's 100 judges.
  • Judicial Educator Vietnam - Key judicial participant teaching two-week labor and employment law seminar to judges in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
  • 2007 Annual Meeting of the California Judges Association in Los Angeles - in collaboration with former Utah Supreme Court Justice, Michael Zimmerman and Dean Charles Halpern, he co-taught a half day seminar, training 40 California State Court Judges in mediation techniques.
