JUDGE MICHAEL B. DUFFICY (Ret.)
Judge Michael Dufficy recently retired from the Marin County bench in 2010 after serving for twenty years. He has extensive experience in all types of matters including but not limited to personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, construction defect, product liability, real estate, land use, employment, family law, & probate matters. In the area of probate and trust law, he has handled a number of complex, multi-party cases, involving will contests and trust litigation in multi-million dollar estates. Recognized as one of the most effective settlement judges in Marin County, Judge Dufficy brings intelligence, imagination, wisdom, and diligence to his settlement approach. He is well known and respected by his peers and both sides of the bar, for his excellent settlement technique and highly developed “people skills”. He “reads” the litigants well and applies his vast knowledge and experience to the case at hand, enabling him to get to the “heart of the matter”. ON THE BENCH During his tenure on the bench, Judge Dufficy served two two-year terms as Presiding Judge of the Superior Court. Over the years he has presided over all calendar assignments including the Court's Appellate Division. Judge Dufficy also served ten years in the Civil Department, six years as Probate Court Judge, and five years as the Family Law Judge, as well as participating in the Marin County Office of Education Mock Trial competition. LAW PRACTICE & ADR TRAINING Before taking the bench, Judge Dufficy practiced law for 26 years in Marin County, including two years as a Marin County Deputy District Attorney. His private practice emphasized family law and criminal defense, but also included all of civil litigation, including personal injury, real estate, construction, and probate matters. As a lawyer, he tried more than 100 civil and criminal jury trials and was certified a "Specialist" by the California State Bar in both family and criminal law.
