Seated attentively behind his corner-office desk high above the sprawling Santa Rosa landscape inside that city’s tallest building, Mike Senneff may at first glance appear to be “L.A. Law’s” prototype of a high-powered “juice” attorney. But the pleasant surprise is that Senneff, quiet-spoken with piercing eye contact, actually asks more questions than does the interviewer assigned to query him. He doesn’t just give lip service to the assertion that he is a good listener; he manifests it.

His curiosity in and genuine concern for other people go to the heart of his success as a widely respected attorney and a go-to guy in cases that are complex, far-reaching, and demanding. Wily, savvy, and keenly aware of what others may be up to with hidden agendas, Senneff is nonetheless a trusting and giving individual who earns confidence through the simple act of gentle inquiry. Instead of imposing ideas and answers upon his clients, his style is to elicit the right path from within them.

This is a tremendous asset to bring to the mediation table. “I have a fairly good sense,” he says modestly, “of what motivates people, where they want to go, and how they want to get there. My role becomes that of someone empowering them to find their own solutions. I am not a passive mediator, however; I have the experience and the ability to offer thoughts, to point out benefits and downsides, and to weigh them accordingly. I am always keenly aware that while we, the mediators, are fairly comfortable and working from a relaxed position, the clients are going through what may be the most important and stressful moments in their lives. So you work very hard to earn their trust and respect.”

Mike Senneff has honed his people skills throughout his distinguished career working in such challenging areas as legal, medical and design professional negligence, construction disputes, partnership and estate disputes, civil rights, and personal injury, so he is no stranger to intense conflict, multi-layered complexity, and displays of emotional outburst from the parties involved. But he brings a serene sense of strength and guidance to a still-burgeoning world of mediation that sorely needs a steadying hand at the tiller.
