Professional Panel - Barbara S. Monty, Esq.
When describing her mediation style, Barbara Monty eschews clichés. "My style of mediation is multi-dimensional. I am an active litigator well versed in representing both Plaintiff and Defendant. I am a fighter and a peace maker at the same time. It keeps me fresh.”
Monty started mediating even before she became a lawyer, so it’s clear that her negotiating skills come naturally and not wholly from training. In the early 1980s, she worked for the City of San Francisco in the seminal Community Boards Project where she helped resolve neighbor conflicts and reduce gang violence. She also served on the San Francisco Human Rights Commission mediating human rights violations.
As a mediator and arbitrator with Resolution Remedies, Monty brings technical subject area skills, energetic negotiating abilities, a strong educational background, and sharp intuition to cases involving “difficult personalities” and personal animosity among parties. Her no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase approach which – combined with her quick intellect, energetic work ethic, kindness, and creativity, leads to clear-cut success with resolving disputes. “I understand,” she explains, “that all parties feel they are in the right and that they should prevail. I can see all sides of the dispute and help parties take some control over an uncertain and stressful process. However, I am involved and persistent in reaching resolution.”
Monty, a Massachusetts native with over 35 years worth of legal work and mediation in the Bay Area, has represented national banks, Pacific Gas & Electric, the Bechtel Corporation, Procter & Gamble, the Chrysler Corporation, and other national and Fortune 500 companies. She has also represented many of the major builders in California and hundreds of construction contractors. She has been General Counsel for an international helicopter company, managing attorney for various national insurance companies, and trial counsel for Liberty Mutual Insurance.
