Extremely affable, warm and engaging, thoughtful and reflective, Greg Engel is a model mediator. “I thoroughly enjoy the give and take of a dispute situation,” he says, “and, while this may sound strange, I relish complex cases. The more complicated the information, the more effective I seem to be. Maybe it stems from the fact that I am an ardent New York Times crossword puzzle aficionado.

“There’s always a reason to resolve a dispute,” he continues, “be it business or personal. Remember that parties at the table are there voluntarily, which shows they want to move toward resolution. I approach each dispute with an open slate – I just listen, and listen very carefully. In short, I let the parties tell me what they want. I have an ability to distill different points of view. It’s fun and enjoyable, because, when you think about it, life is one big resolution.

“And, in the end,” concludes Engel, “it’s not really about the amount of the dollars awarded; it’s more about the human quotient, and my job is to read and comprehend all the different personalities at the table and work to guide them to a satisfactory conclusion. You bring the human element into the process, and you work very hard to keep things simple. And my ultimate goal is to at least attain clarity. All sides may not come to a complete agreement, but if we establish a sense of clarity, then I am satisfied.”

After a few moments of silent reflection, Engel grins and says, “Come to think of it, mediation is a lot like marriage. I have been married 25 years to a wonderful woman, Pamela, who supports me unconditionally. What we bring to the marriage mirrors what I bring to mediation – patience and a willingness to truly hear what someone is saying in all its dimensions. It works.”
